THIRD INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF AFRILEX

You are cordially invited to attend the Third International Conference of the African Association for Lexicography.

 

Venue: J. Chris Coetzee Building in Hoffman Street on the campus of the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education (PUCHE), Potchefstroom, South Africa.

 

(a) Main Programme (Keynotes and individual papers):

Monday 29 and Tuesday 30 June 1998

Registration Fee: Members: R140; Non-members: R150; late registration (at Conference Venue): R160

Registration for the Main Programme includes refreshments and lunch on Monday and Tuesday. Registered participants are also invited to the Pharos-Afrilex Dinner on Monday.

 

(b) One-Day Training Course in Lexicography (The Compilation of Monolingual Dictionaries – A Summary of SALEX '97):

Wednesday 1 July 1998

Registration Fee: R50

Registration for this training course includes refreshments, lunch and course material.

Delegates who attended SALEX '97 in Grahamstown as well as those who plan to attend Afrilex-Salex'98, are advised to attend this one-day course. (See the next paragraph for more information on Afrilex-Salex'98.)

A Training Course for Practising Lexicographers AFRILEX-SALEX'98

 

CONFERENCE ORGANISATION

All aspects of the conference organisation will be handled by the Organiser, Prof. D.J. Prinsloo, and all correspondence, hostel reservations, queries, etc. should be directed to him at the address given above. Mr. Gerhard van Huyssteen is our Local Organiser ("our man on the scene at the University of Potchefstroom"). Last minute organisational matters as well as the day to day running of the conference will be handled jointly by the Organiser and Mr. G. van Huyssteen.

 

REGISTRATION

To register for the Conference, please complete the REPLY FORM and return it to the Organiser with the registration fee to reach him no later than 10 June 1998. Payments for registration can also be made directly into the AFRILEX savings account, Volkskas Hatfield Pretoria, Branch code 008675, Account no. 9054460560. Fax the REPLY FORM, as well as the DEPOSIT SLIP, to Prof. D.J. Prinsloo at (012) 420-3163. Reservations and payment for Hostel Accommodation can also be done this way but please note the early deadline for reservations in a University Hostel below.

 

PHAROS-AFRILEX CONFERENCE DINNER

PHAROS invites all registered participants to attend the Conference Dinner on Monday evening. Venue and time will be announced in the final programme.

University Hostel

Room only: R120 per night (R60 per person sharing). No single tariffs are available, if room is occupied by one person only, the charge will still be R120 per night. Please note that the University authorities enforce an early deadline for bookings. If you wish to stay in a University hostel your reservation and full payment must reach me no later than Friday 22 May 1998. Reservations and payments should therefore be mailed to me no later than 15 May in order to reach me before the 22nd. Payments for registration and accommodation can also be made directly into the AFRILEX bank account up to 22 May. (Details and procedure are given on the REPLY FORM.)

Keep in mind that accommodation is very basic. Bring enough warm clothes.

 

TRAVELLING ARRANGEMENTS

The distance between the Johannesburg International Airport and Potchefstroom is approximately 110 km (one and a half hour's drive by car).

 

Car rental

You are strongly advised to budget and arrange for car rental from the Johannesburg International Airport to Potchefstroom and back to the Airport. Your institution probably has a contract with one of the car rental companies such as Avis, Imperial or Tempest and can offer you very favourable rates.

 

Shuttle Service

Since Afrilex is charged R350 for a single round trip between the Conference Venue and the Airport, we unfortunately cannot provide a shuttle service on a regular basis, nor can we transport individuals to and from the airport during the Conference. Afrilex would however arrange for a shuttle service on the following dates, for a nominal fee of R30 per person:

Sunday 28 June from the Johannesburg International Airport to Potchefstroom at approximately 17:00

Tuesday 30 June from Potchefstroom to the Johannesburg International Airport, directly after the closure of the Conference. The expected time of arrival at the Johannesburg International Airport is 17:00

Wednesday 1 July from Potchefstroom to the Johannesburg International Airport directly after the closure of the Training Course, expected arrival time at the Johannesburg International Airport is 17:00

Please indicate clearly on the REPLY FORM if you wish to make use of this limited shuttle service between the airport and the university. Schedule your flights accordingly.

 

BOARD MEETING

Members of the Board and Executive of Afrilex must keep in mind that a meeting will be scheduled for late afternoon and evening on 28 June 1998. Please take this into consideration when making travelling and accommodation arrangements The Secretary will inform you in due course of the exact time(s) and venue.
